What CBT is and how the course works
Five syllabus elements
Introduction; practical machine training; practical riding skills; pre-road briefing; practical on-road riding.
Course length
Elements A-D are not time-bound. Element E includes a mandatory minimum of four hours of on-road riding. Overall duration depends on ability and progress.
CBT certificate
Once the required standard is reached, the certificate is valid for two years.
Approved training
In Northern Ireland, CBT must be delivered by an appropriately registered Approved Motorcycle Instructor / CBT trainer.
What you need before taking CBT
Licence
A provisional licence in the relevant category is required to take CBT.
Protective equipment
Bring an appropriate helmet, protective clothing, gloves and sturdy footwear. Ask Ians Training Solutions what protective equipment is available to supply or hire.
Motorcycle
Ask whether an Ians Training Solutions motorcycle is included in each CBT package and whether insurance, fuel or deposit conditions apply.
Ability standard
A certificate is issued when the rider reaches a satisfactory standard; completion is not guaranteed within a fixed day for every candidate.
What CBT allows you to do next
AM / A1 learners
A valid CBT can allow eligible learner riders to ride unaccompanied on public roads within the relevant restrictions.
A2 / A learners
Learner riders on A2 or A motorcycles must be accompanied by an Approved Motorcycle Instructor while training on public roads, except during the on-road practical test with the examiner.
Full licence route
To gain full motorcycle entitlement, candidates normally progress through the appropriate theory test, manoeuvres test and on-road practical test for the chosen category.
Renewal
Renewal If the CBT certificate expires after two years and the rider has not gained full entitlement, another CBT is required to continue riding as a learner.
